Setting up the PhiliaHealth wearable and app

Unbox, Charge Wearable and Set Up

Please read the instructions below, or watch the setup instruction video.

Unbox the PhiliaHealth wearable, charger, charging cable, and USB wall plug.

Plug the charging cable into the charger and USB wall plug, plug into a wall socket.

Ensure your ‘charging station’ is set up in a place that is easy to see and remember.

  • A solid white light indicates the charger is powered

Charge the PhiliaHealth wearable by seating the wearable on the charger. You may remove the strap to seat it more easily.

  • A solid orange light indicates charging is occurring
  • A blinking white light indicates the device is not charging or not correctly seated in the charger. Adjust wearable position until the blinking light becomes solid.

For regular charging, make sure your phone is located next to the wearable to ensure good Bluetooth connectivity and seamless data syncing.

Setting up the app

Philia Labs will request your full name and email address in an onboarding survey.

We will then send you log in details to use for the app.

Download the app by either:

  • Scanning the relevant QR code below, OR
  • Visiting the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) and searching for the Biostrap app (note: do not install the Vital Science by Biostrap app)

Open the app on your desktop, then use the deidentified login details provided by Philia Labs to sign in.

  • Tap on the ‘Log in’ link next to “Already a user” 
  • On the next screen, enter the username and password that was provided to you and click the Login button.
  • Then, read and accept the terms and conditions.

You may like to customize your PhiliaHealth profile later on (optional) using the settings cog at the bottom right of the screen.

Pair app and wearable

Enable Wifi and Bluetooth on your phone so that the wearable can connect with the App during set up and while charging.

The App should automatically prompt you to pair with the Device (wearable).

  • If not automatically prompted to pair, go to Settings (bottom right) and click + Add Device
  • Bluetooth are enabled on your phone, then Rescan

When pairing is complete, you will receive a notification “Wristband added.”

Click Ok. The Device is now ready for use.

Use, charge and sync wearable, complete survey

Using the wearable

Please read the instructions below, or watch the instruction video. 

Once fully charged after set up (1 – 2 hours), the wearable is ready to use.

Fit the wearable on your non dominant wrist, fit snugly behind your wrist bone.

Put the wearable on an hour before bed, wear all night, and remove around 30 minutes after waking. You may remove the wearable if it causes irritation.

Avoid immersion in water.

Charging, syncing and completing the survey

Allow ~30 minutes for daily charging and syncing (e.g. while showering).

  • Seat the wearable on the charger.
  • Place phone next to charger (ensure wifi and Bluetooth are enabled).
  • Open the Biostrap app on your phone, tap on Settings tab, check device is connected.

While the data is syncing, a survey window will appear in the app.

  • Complete all fields in the survey
  • Press the submit button

Data sync progress can be checked in the Settings menu of the app

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

FAQ - Operation

Q. Can I take it off at night if it is affecting my sleep?

A. Yes. If the PhiliaHealth affects your sleep, remove it

Q. Can I wear PhiliaHealth in the shower or while swimming?

A. No. While the unit is waterproof, water temperature may affect your heart rate data.

Q. Can I wear another watch or device while using PhiliaHealth?

A. Yes but wear them on different wrists (PhiliaHealth on your non-dominant wrist).

Q. Can I wear it if I am doing physical activity?

A. Yes, if you feel comfortable doing so and it does not damage the unit (e.g. no hard physical contact).

Q. Is PhiliaHealth safe?

A. Yes. The PhiliaHealth wearable is unobtrusive and completely safe.

Q. How do I return PhiliaHealth after the study?

A. Repack everything in the wearable box using the checklist provided. Sign the return label and attach to the postage box.  Post at an Australia Post office or in the Express Post box.

FAQ - Sleep Diary

Q. When do I complete the sleep diary?

A. The survey appears automatically when you open the app to sync data each morning and it should be completed then.

Q. Is the sleep diary important?

A. Yes. It takes 5 minutes and will help us understand what affects your stress levels. If you forget to complete the diary, no harm done.

FAQ - Technical

Q. How do I turn it on? How do I know it’s working?

A. It is on and working if the red LED on the underside of the wearable blinks periodically.

Q. How do I know when it is charged?

A. The PhiliaHealth will take around 30 minutes per day to reach full charge. The app will tell you how much charge is left.

Q. How is data uploaded and where is the data stored?

A. Data is uploaded via Bluetooth during charging and stored in Philia’s secure servers.

Q. How can I sync data faster? (Android)

Q. How does the PhiliaHealth work?

A. The PhiliaHealth measures raw skin and cardiac information. Philia Labs analyses the data with an algorithm and calculates a metric that can indicate how stressed you are.

Troubleshooting

If you need assistance at any time, contact support@philialabs.com.au and we will contact you as soon as possible.
 

In the unlikely event that something goes wrong, we may contact you by text, email or phone and ask you to take certain actions. We may ask you to do as follows:

  • close the App and re-open (below)
  • disconnect the App from the wearable and re-connect (below)
  • turn Bluetooth off and on again
  • restart your phone.

Seamless Data Sync – Run app in background

If your Android takes a long time to sync data, it is because your phone forced the Biostrap app to disconnect from PhiliaHealth wearable. Follow the steps below to enable sync all the time. Warning: your phone battery consumption will go up.

Android:

  • Samsung:
    • To keep your apps working properly make sure you enable:
      Settings -> Apps -> Your App -> Battery -> Battery optimization -> All apps -> Biostrap -> Don’t optimize.
  • Xiaomi:
    • Step 1) Go to “Settings” then select “Installed Applications”.
    • Step 2)Search then Tap/ Click on “Follow Up” Application.
    • Step 3) Turn on “Autostart” option and Tap “Ok”
    • Step 4) Now Tap on “Battery saver” then select the first option “No restrictions”.
  • Google Pixel:
    • Go to Settings > Apps & notifications > Advanced > Special app access > Battery optimization.
    • If Biostrap is not listed here, tap the blue bar at the top of the screen and switch the view to All apps, then scroll down until you find Biostrap.
    • Tap it, set it to Don’t optimize, and then tap Done.

Close and re-open the App

Android:

  • Open app switcher (swipe up from bottom left or tap left navigation button)
  • Swipe up on app card to close
  • Open app again

iPhone SE, 8 and earlier:

  • Double click the home button to show most recently used apps
  • Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close
  • Swipe on the app’s preview to close the app
  • Open app again

iPhone X onwards:

  • On the home screen, swipe up from the bottom and pause in the middle of screen
  • Swipe right or left to find the app you want to close
  • Swipe on the app’s preview to close the app
  • Open app again

Reconnecting to the wearable

  • Open the Biostrap app
  • Tap settings in the bottom right
  • Tap device card at top of screen under ‘Devices’
  • Tap on ‘Remove Device’ and then remove
  • Tap ‘Add Device’
  • Tap on Device name when it appears
  • Observe ‘Device Added’ popup in the app and red LED lights flash on the underside of the wearable.

Damage, loss or theft

If the device is damaged, lost or stolen, please contact us as soon as possible at support@philialabs.com.au
